Camel Hair

Camel hair comes from the fine undercoat of Bactrian camels across Mongolia, northern China, and Central Asia. Collected during seasonal molting through gentle combing rather than shearing, it delivers exceptional warmth, breathability, and durability in a naturally colored fiber ranging from 18 to 24 microns. Supply is inherently limited and non-scalable by nature.

The environmental profile is low impact when pastoral systems are functioning well. The greatest ethical challenge is economic. As with alpaca and yak, the final market value rarely reflects what herders receive for raw fiber. Brands should work directly with herder cooperatives and invest in long-term purchasing relationships rather than spot sourcing.

There is no single certification standard for camel hair, so supplier documentation carries the full weight of due diligence. Request origin and herd practice records, verify non-invasive collection, favor natural colorways, and use it in limited premium applications. Camel hair rewards restraint, not scale.
